What's actually happening in a BMP-to-JPG conversion

The pixel data in your source is decoded, held briefly in memory as a raw bitmap, and re-encoded into the target format's container. About the BMP Format

BMP (Bitmap Image File) is a raster image format developed by Microsoft, dating back to 1986.
