How to Fix a Sideways Photo From Your Phone (EXIF Rotation Explained)

You take a photo on your phone. It looks perfect in your camera roll. You email it to someone, and they tell you it arrived sideways. Or you upload it to a website, and it displays rotated 90 degrees. Or you insert it into a Word document, and it's upside down.

The photo is fine. The problem is how different software reads its orientation data.

Why this happens

When your phone takes a photo, it doesn't actually rotate the image data. Instead, it stores a small tag in the file's EXIF metadata called "Orientation" — a number from 1 to 8 that tells viewers "display this image rotated 90° clockwise" or "display this image rotated 180°." Your phone's gallery app reads this tag and displays the photo correctly. Other software may or may not.

The result: the same image file looks correct on your iPhone but sideways in Outlook, correct in Chrome but rotated in an older version of Internet Explorer, correct in WhatsApp but sideways when you upload it to a form.

This isn't a bug in any one application — it's a disagreement between software about whether to honour EXIF orientation data.

The permanent fix

Upload the image to the rotate tool. Rotate it to the correct orientation — 90° clockwise, 90° counter-clockwise, or 180°. Download the result.

The rotated image has its pixel data physically rearranged to match the correct orientation, and the EXIF orientation tag is reset to 1 (normal). This means every application, viewer, email client, browser, and printer will display it correctly — no ambiguity, no tag interpretation needed.

Why 90° rotations are special

For photos that are simply sideways (the most common case), a 90° rotation is exactly what you need and there's zero quality penalty.

Preventing the problem

On iPhone: this behaviour is built into iOS and there's no setting to change it. The EXIF tag approach is actually the correct standard — the issue is that some receivers don't read it.

On Android: same situation. Most Android cameras store EXIF orientation rather than physically rotating the image.

The only reliable prevention is to rotate the image file before sharing it, which is what the tool does. Think of it as "baking" the correct orientation into the file permanently.
