How Browser-Based Image Resizing Works

When you upload a photo, the tool reads the file entirely inside your browser using the HTML5 Canvas API. No pixel data is transmitted to a remote server. The canvas element draws the original image at full resolution, then redraws it at the target width and height using high-quality bilinear interpolation. This approach preserves sharpness while giving you real-time control over the output dimensions.

The aspect-ratio lock keeps proportions intact by default. When you change the width, the height updates automatically (and vice versa) so the image is never distorted. Unlock the ratio when you need to crop to a non-proportional size, such as converting a landscape photo into a square Instagram post.

Choosing the right output format matters. PNG preserves every pixel perfectly and supports transparency, making it ideal for graphics with text or logos. JPG uses lossy compression controlled by the quality slider, which is best for photographs where a small quality trade-off produces a much smaller file. WebP offers the best of both worlds — smaller file sizes than JPG at comparable quality — and is supported by all modern browsers.
