About the PPT Format

PPT is the legacy presentation format used by Microsoft PowerPoint from version 97 through 2003. It stores slides, speaker notes, animations, and embedded media in a proprietary binary structure. PPT files were the universal standard for business presentations and academic lectures before being replaced by the modern PPTX format in Office 2007.

PPT files can still be opened in modern PowerPoint, Google Slides, LibreOffice Impress, and most presentation software. However, some advanced formatting may not render correctly in newer applications. The binary PPT format also produces larger file sizes than PPTX and lacks features like co-authoring and improved data recovery. Converting legacy PPT files to PPTX is recommended for better compatibility and smaller file sizes.
