Instagram Image Sizes 2026 — Every Format, Every Dimension
Why Instagram image sizes matter
Upload a photo at the wrong dimensions and Instagram will crop it — cutting off heads, losing text, or compressing your carefully composed shot into a blurry thumbnail. Every format on Instagram has a specific aspect ratio and recommended resolution. Use the right size and your content looks sharp; use the wrong one and the algorithm has to guess what to cut.
Instagram post sizes
Square post: 1080 × 1080 px (1:1 ratio) — the classic Instagram format.
Portrait post: 1080 × 1350 px (4:5 ratio) — takes up more screen space in the feed. Best for engagement.
Landscape post: 1080 × 566 px (1.91:1 ratio) — less common, shows smaller in the feed.
Carousel: Same dimensions as single posts. All images in a carousel should use the same aspect ratio — Instagram forces the first image's ratio on all subsequent slides.
Instagram Stories and Reels
Stories: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16 ratio) — full-screen vertical. Leave 250px of safe space at the top (for the username bar) and bottom (for the reply bar).
Reels: 1080 × 1920 px (9:16 ratio) — same as Stories. Reels thumbnails crop to 1080 × 1350 in the profile grid, so keep important content in the center 70% of the frame.
Reels cover image: 1080 × 1920 px, but the visible area in the grid is the center 1080 × 1350 px.
Profile picture
Profile picture: 320 × 320 px minimum (1:1 ratio). Instagram displays it at 110 × 110 px on most screens, but stores it at 320 px. Upload at least 320 × 320 for sharpness on high-density displays. The image is cropped to a circle — keep important details away from the corners.
