RAW vs JPG: When to Shoot Each and When to Convert
Every photography forum, YouTube tutorial, and camera review says the same thing: "shoot RAW." It's repeated so often it's become dogma. And for some types of photography, it's absolutely correct. But for other situations, shooting JPG is not only fine — it's the better choice.
Understanding why requires knowing what RAW actually gives you, what it costs, and when those trade-offs tilt in each direction. It's not a question of quality versus convenience — it's about matching the tool to the job.
What RAW gives you that JPG doesn't
More data per pixel. RAW files store 12 or 14 bits of data per colour channel. JPG stores 8 bits. In practical terms, a 14-bit RAW file captures 16,384 tonal values per channel. A JPG captures 256. That's 64 times more information to work with when you're adjusting exposure, shadows, highlights, and colour in post-processing.
Highlight and shadow recovery. This is the biggest tangible benefit. A slightly overexposed sky in a RAW file can often be recovered completely — the data is there, just clipped in the preview. In a JPG, overexposed areas are pure white with no underlying data to recover. Similarly, dark shadows in a RAW file contain detail that can be lifted cleanly; in a JPG, lifting shadows amplifies compression artefacts and noise.
White balance is non-destructive. In a RAW file, white balance is metadata — a tag that says "render this at 5500K." You can change it to any value after the fact with zero quality loss. In a JPG, white balance is baked into the pixel data. Shifting it in post introduces colour casts and reduces quality.
No compression artefacts. JPG uses lossy DCT compression that introduces blocky artefacts, especially in smooth gradients (skies, skin tones, studio backgrounds). RAW files have no compression artefacts (or minimal ones in compressed RAW variants like Canon's C-RAW — see the CR3 format comparison).
More colour information. The 12–14 bit depth means smoother colour transitions and more latitude for colour grading. Push the saturation or vibrance slider hard on a JPG and you'll see banding in gradients. RAW handles the same adjustment smoothly.
What RAW costs you
File size. A 24-megapixel RAW file is 20–30 MB. The same shot as a high-quality JPG is 5–8 MB. Shoot 500 photos at an event and you're looking at 10–15 GB in RAW versus 2.5–4 GB in JPG. Over a year of active shooting — maybe 20,000 photos — RAW takes 400–600 GB versus 100–160 GB for JPG. That's more storage on your cards, more space on your hard drives, and longer backup times.
Processing time. Every RAW file needs to be processed — converted to a viewable format through demosaicing, colour rendering, and export. JPGs are ready to use immediately. If you shoot 500 photos and none of them need editing, RAW added zero value and cost you processing time.
Buffer and write speed. Cameras write RAW files to the card slower than JPGs because the files are larger. In burst shooting, you'll fill the camera's buffer faster with RAW. A Canon R6 shoots 20 fps for about 240 RAW frames before the buffer fills; in JPG, it can shoot essentially unlimited bursts at 20 fps.

When to shoot RAW
Paid work. Weddings, portraits, commercial, editorial. If a client is paying you, shoot RAW. The editing flexibility is insurance — if the exposure is slightly off or the white balance is wrong under mixed lighting, RAW lets you fix it without quality loss. Difficult or mixed lighting. Concerts, church interiors, outdoor events with shade and sun, indoor venues with multiple light sources. When the lighting is unpredictable or varies widely within a scene, RAW gives you the headroom to fix it in post.
Landscape and travel photography. When you're shooting a sunset with a 10-stop dynamic range and you want to recover both the bright sky and the dark foreground, RAW's extra bit depth is essential. This is where the 14-bit data makes a visible, meaningful difference.
Any time you plan to edit significantly. If the photos are going through Lightroom or Capture One for colour grading, exposure adjustment, or any significant post-processing, start with RAW. Editing a JPG is like photocopying a photocopy — each generation degrades the image.
When to shoot JPG
Social events and casual photography. Birthday parties, family dinners, travel snapshots. If the photos are going straight to Instagram or the family WhatsApp group without editing, JPG is perfect. Your camera's built-in processing (colour profiles, contrast, sharpening) produces great-looking photos that need no post-processing.
Sports and fast action with high burst rates. When you're shooting 1,000+ frames at a sports event, RAW creates a massive processing bottleneck afterwards. Sports photographers for wire services often shoot JPG (or RAW + JPG and deliver the JPGs same-minute via WiFi transfer) because the turnaround requirements don't allow for RAW processing. The AP and Reuters photo desks need images within seconds of the play.
Documentation and real estate. Shooting 200 rooms in a hotel for a listing? The lighting is controlled, the exposure is consistent, and nobody is going to colour-grade each frame. JPG at high quality saves time and storage with no practical quality penalty.
When your camera's JPG processing is excellent. Fujifilm's film simulation recipes (Classic Neg, Pro Neg Hi, Astia, Classic Chrome, Eterna) produce JPGs that many photographers consider better than what they'd achieve through RAW processing. Some Fuji shooters deliberately shoot JPG-only for the in-camera colour science and the immediacy of it.
The conversion workflow
When you shoot RAW and need JPGs for delivery or sharing, you need a conversion step. The options range from quick and automatic to fully controlled:
Quick conversion (no editing): The image converter extracts the camera's embedded JPG preview from the RAW file and gives you a ready-to-share photo. This is the fastest option when you don't need to adjust anything — the output looks like what the camera showed you on the LCD.

Selective conversion: Edit only the keepers in your RAW processor, export those as JPG. Skip the rejects entirely. This is the most common workflow for most photographers — cull, edit the best, export to JPG for delivery.

Frequently asked questions
Is RAW always higher quality than JPG?
RAW contains more data, but "quality" depends on context. A well-exposed JPG from a modern camera looks identical to an unedited RAW file converted to JPG at the same settings. RAW's advantage is editing flexibility and recovery headroom, not inherent visual superiority in a properly exposed shot.
Does shooting RAW make my photos look better?
Not automatically. RAW photos look flat and slightly dull straight from the camera because they haven't been processed — no sharpening, no contrast boost, no saturation enhancement. The camera's JPG engine applies all of that automatically. RAW gives you the tools to make photos better through editing — but only if you actually do the editing.
Can I convert JPG back to RAW?
No. RAW is the original sensor data captured at the moment of exposure. Once it's been processed and compressed into a JPG, the discarded data is gone permanently. You can't reconstruct 14-bit data from an 8-bit file, just as you can't un-bake a cake back into ingredients.
How many RAW files can my memory card hold?
A 64 GB card holds roughly 2,100 RAW files from a 24MP camera (at ~30 MB each), or about 8,500 high-quality JPGs (at ~7.5 MB each). A 128 GB card doubles those numbers. Higher-megapixel cameras produce larger files — a 45MP Sony A7R V RAW file is about 60 MB, so a 128 GB card holds roughly 2,100 files.
Does shooting RAW drain my battery faster?
Slightly. The larger file size means more write time to the card, which uses more power. The difference is typically 5–10% of battery life — noticeable over a long shooting day but not dramatic enough to be the deciding factor.
