What DPI Should I Use for Printing? Image Resolution Guide

DPI stands for dots per inch. It tells a printer how many tiny dots of ink to squeeze into each inch of paper. More dots per inch means sharper detail and smoother gradients. Fewer dots per inch means visible pixelation, especially up close. The right DPI depends on what you are printing and how close someone will view it.

The Three DPI Standards

300 DPI — Photo prints and professional work. This is the gold standard for anything viewed at arm's length: photo prints, brochures, business cards, book pages, and magazine spreads. At 300 DPI, individual dots are invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. Every print shop, photo lab, and professional printer expects 300 DPI.
150 DPI — Large-format prints and posters. Posters, banners, and trade show displays are viewed from several feet away. At that distance, 150 DPI looks perfectly sharp because your eyes cannot resolve the individual dots. Printing a 24x36 inch poster at 300 DPI would require a 7200x10800 pixel image, which most cameras cannot produce. At 150 DPI, you only need 3600x5400 pixels — achievable with any modern phone camera.
72 DPI — Screen only, never print. 72 DPI is a legacy standard from early Mac displays. Images at 72 DPI look fine on a screen because monitors do not use DPI the same way printers do. But if you send a 72 DPI image to a printer at the same physical size, it will be blurry, blocky, and unprofessional. If your image is 72 DPI, you need to resize it before printing.

DPI vs PPI

DPI (dots per inch) is a printer term — how many ink dots the printer puts down. PPI (pixels per inch) is a screen/digital term — how many pixels occupy one inch of image. In practice, people use DPI for both. When someone says "make it 300 DPI," they mean 300 pixels per inch in the image file. The end result is the same.

How to Check Your Image's DPI

On a Mac, right-click the image, select Get Info, and look under More Info for the DPI value. On Windows, right-click the image, select Properties, go to the Details tab, and look for horizontal and vertical resolution. In Photoshop, go to Image → Image Size and look at the Resolution field.
Most phone cameras save images at 72 DPI in the metadata — but this is misleading. A 12-megapixel phone photo at 4000x3000 pixels has plenty of data for a high-quality print. The DPI metadata is just a default label; what actually matters is the pixel count.

How to Calculate Print Size from Pixels

The formula is straightforward: width in inches = width in pixels ÷ DPI. If you have a 3000-pixel-wide image and want to print at 300 DPI, your maximum print width is 3000 ÷ 300 = 10 inches.
Working the other way: if you need a specific print size, multiply the dimensions by 300 to get the required pixels. A 4x6 inch print at 300 DPI needs 1200x1800 pixels. An 8x10 inch print needs 2400x3000 pixels.

Common Print Sizes and Minimum Pixel Requirements

At 300 DPI (the standard for photo prints):
  • 4x6 inches — 1200 x 1800 pixels (standard photo print)
  • 5x7 inches — 1500 x 2100 pixels
  • 8x10 inches — 2400 x 3000 pixels
  • 11x14 inches — 3300 x 4200 pixels
  • 16x20 inches — 4800 x 6000 pixels
  • 24x36 inches — 7200 x 10800 pixels (use 150 DPI instead: 3600 x 5400)
Most modern smartphones shoot at 12 megapixels (4000x3000) or higher, which gives you a clean 300 DPI print up to about 10x13 inches. For anything larger, you can either print at 150 DPI (fine for posters) or upscale the image using an AI upscaler.

How to Change DPI Without Losing Quality

There are two ways to change an image's DPI, and they produce very different results.
Changing DPI without resampling — this changes only the metadata. The pixel count stays exactly the same. A 3000x2000 image at 72 DPI becomes a 3000x2000 image at 300 DPI. No quality is lost because no pixels are added or removed. The trade-off is that the print size changes: at 72 DPI it prints at 41.7x27.8 inches, but at 300 DPI it prints at 10x6.7 inches. This is the correct approach when your image already has enough pixels.
Changing DPI with resampling (upscaling) — this adds new pixels to increase the resolution. If you have a 1000x1000 pixel image and need 3000x3000, the software has to invent two-thirds of the pixels. Traditional upscaling (bicubic, bilinear) produces soft, slightly blurry results. AI-based upscaling uses neural networks to generate realistic detail and produces much better results for 2x-4x enlargements.

When to Upscale

Only upscale when your image genuinely does not have enough pixels for the print size you need. Going from 1500px to 3000px (2x) with an AI upscaler produces excellent results. Going from 500px to 3000px (6x) will always look soft regardless of the method. Start with the highest-resolution original you have.

Practical Recommendations

  • Photo prints (4x6, 5x7, 8x10): 300 DPI. No exceptions. Every photo lab will reject or warn about lower resolutions.
  • Canvas prints and wall art: 200-300 DPI. Canvas texture hides some softness, so you can get away with 200 DPI for large canvases.
  • Posters and large-format: 150 DPI. Viewed from 3+ feet away, 150 DPI is indistinguishable from 300 DPI.
  • Billboards and banners: 30-72 DPI. Viewed from 10+ feet away. This is why billboard images look terrible up close but fine from the road.
  • Screen and web: DPI does not matter. Only pixel dimensions matter. A 1920x1080 image displays identically whether it is tagged as 72 DPI or 300 DPI.
