About the JPEG Format
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) is a widely used image format created in 1992 by the JPEG committee. It employs DCT-based (Discrete Cosine Transform) lossy compression, which reduces file size by selectively discarding visual information that the human eye is least likely to notice.
