About the M2TS Format
M2TS is an MPEG-2 Transport Stream as written to Blu-ray discs and by AVCHD camcorders. The transport stream design comes from broadcasting, where a stream has to be joinable at any moment and survive corrupted packets, so the data is split into small fixed-size packets with timing information throughout.
That design makes M2TS dependable for playback but awkward for everything else, editors often stumble on it, the files are large, and camcorder footage frequently arrives split across several files for one continuous recording. The video inside is usually already H.264, so converting to MP4 is often a re-wrap rather than a re-encode: fast, and with no quality cost. The result is far easier to edit, upload and store.
