AVIF to PNG: next-gen codec to universal lossless

AVIF uses the AV1 intra-frame codec which achieves 50% better compression than JPG and supports HDR, wide gamut, and alpha transparency. Converting to PNG decodes the AV1-compressed data into raw pixels and stores them losslessly with DEFLATE compression. The PNG preserves every decoded pixel without additional loss but is significantly larger. Alpha transparency from the AVIF source is preserved in the PNG output, making this the preferred extraction path for transparent AVIF images. What does not survive is the HDR signalling: an AVIF tagged with the PQ or HLG transfer curve loses that tag, and the PNG is read back as ordinary sRGB.

Convert AVIF to PNG when you need lossless quality for editing, when the image has transparency that JPG would destroy, or when your software doesn't support AVIF yet. PNG provides maximum compatibility with image editors, web browsers, and document workflows.
