PDF → PNG is the higher-quality version of PDF → JPG — preserves sharp text edges without JPG artefacts. The right choice when the PDF is text-heavy (a contract excerpt, a form example) and the receiving system needs an image. File sizes are 2-5× JPG for the same page but text stays crisp at any zoom level.
PNG is lossless and supports transparency — the two things JPG can't do. Screenshots, UI mockups, logos, icons, diagrams, and anything with sharp edges or text should be PNG. File sizes are larger than JPG for photographic content (usually 2-5×), so PNG is a bad choice for photographs unless you specifically need lossless. Note: PNG has no metadata for camera EXIF, so converting a photo JPG → PNG loses the camera info.
Like PDF-to-JPG, this rasterizes each page at a chosen DPI, but stores the result as lossless PNG instead of lossy JPG. The DEFLATE compression preserves every rendered pixel perfectly — text edges stay razor-sharp, and gradients show no banding or blocking artifacts. PNG files are larger than equivalent JPGs but the quality difference is noticeable for documents with fine text, thin lines, and technical diagrams.
Convert PDF to PNG when quality is critical — OCR preprocessing (sharp text improves recognition accuracy), technical documentation screenshots, archival of rendered pages, or any context where JPG compression artifacts would be visible or problematic.
