APE and ALAC Files Won't Play? How to Open Lossless Audio Anywhere

You downloaded an album and it came as a pile of .ape files. Or someone shared their music library and half the tracks are .m4a files that turn out to be ALAC. You double-click to play and either your player chokes, says "unsupported format," or just does nothing.

You know the files aren't corrupted because the person who sent them says they play fine on their setup. The problem is format support — not every player can decode every lossless codec, and APE in particular has a reputation for being difficult.

Why APE files won't play on most devices

APE (Monkey's Audio) is a lossless codec developed by Matt Ashland. It achieves slightly better compression than FLAC — roughly 5-10% smaller files — but it trades compatibility for that space savings.

The APE decoder is computationally expensive. foobar2000 on Windows handles it fine because it runs on a powerful x86 CPU with plenty of RAM. But embedded processors in car stereos, portable audio players, and even some smartphones struggle with APE decoding. The format was designed for maximum compression, not for broad hardware support.

Here's where it gets worse: APE isn't just hard to decode, it's also fragile. FLAC uses a frame-based structure where each frame can be independently decoded. If a FLAC file has a corrupt section, the player skips the bad frames and keeps going. APE's compression blocks are interdependent — corruption in one block can cascade and make everything after it unplayable.

Windows Media Player — no.
iTunes/Apple Music — no.
Most Android stock players — no.
VLC — yes.
foobar2000 — yes.
Most car stereos — no.
Most network streamers (Sonos, Bluesound) — no.

Why ALAC files cause problems outside Apple

ALAC (Apple Lossless) lives inside an M4A container — the same wrapper that AAC uses. The container format is MPEG-4 Part 14, and the audio codec is Apple's proprietary lossless compression (open-sourced in 2011 but still primarily an Apple-ecosystem format).

The confusing part: an .m4a file could contain AAC or ALAC, and you can't tell from the extension alone. A player might support M4A with AAC (very common) but not M4A with ALAC (less common). You try to play what looks like a normal .m4a file and it fails — not because the container is wrong but because the player doesn't have an ALAC decoder.

ALAC support breakdown:
Apple devices — perfect, obviously.
Android — generally supported since Android 3.1, but some manufacturer skins break it.
VLC — yes.
Windows Media Player — only with codec packs or Windows 10+.
Car stereos — rarely.
Smart speakers (non-Apple) — depends on the brand.

How to identify what's inside an M4A file

If you have an .m4a file and aren't sure whether it's AAC or ALAC, VLC can tell you. Open the file in VLC, then go to Tools > Codec Information (Windows) or Window > Media Information (Mac). The codec field will say either "MPEG AAC Audio" for AAC or "Apple Lossless" for ALAC. Alternatively, run ffprobe filename.m4a on the command line and look for "alac" or "aac" in the codec output.

The universal fix: convert to FLAC or MP3

FLAC is the answer for lossless playback on non-Apple devices. It's supported by virtually everything made in the last decade — Android, Windows, Linux, Sonos, Bluesound, Plex, Kodi, car stereos with USB, and all major audio software.

Converting APE or ALAC to FLAC is genuinely lossless — no quality loss at all. All three formats store the same underlying PCM audio data, just compressed with different algorithms. Going from APE to FLAC or ALAC to FLAC is like re-zipping a file with a different compression tool — the contents are identical.

If your target device doesn't support FLAC either (rare, but some very old hardware or basic fitness watches fall into this category), convert to MP3 instead. This is lossy — you'll lose some audio data — but at 256 or 320 kbps, the quality is excellent and MP3 is truly universal.

How to convert APE and ALAC files

Dealing with APE + CUE sheet combos

A common scenario: you download a lossless album and find one large .ape file plus a .cue file. The .cue sheet is a plain-text index that tells the player where each track starts and ends within the single audio file. This was a popular way to distribute CD rips in the early 2000s.

Most players can't use .cue sheets at all (foobar2000 is a notable exception). You need to split the single APE file into individual tracks using the cue sheet, then convert each track.

The easiest approach: use CUETools (Windows) or XLD (Mac). Both can read the APE + CUE combo and output individual FLAC files with proper metadata (track titles, artist, album) pulled from the cue sheet. On Linux, shnsplit combined with cuetag does the same thing from the command line.

Preserving metadata during conversion

Lossless formats store metadata differently: FLAC uses Vorbis comments, ALAC uses iTunes-style MP4 tags, and APE uses APEv2 tags. When converting between them, most good converters (foobar2000, XLD, FFmpeg) automatically translate the common fields — title, artist, album, track number, year, genre, cover art.

Occasionally, custom or unusual tags get lost in translation. If your files have tags like ReplayGain values, lyrics, or custom fields, check the output files to make sure everything transferred. A tagging tool like Mp3tag (Windows) or Kid3 (Mac/Linux) lets you batch-inspect and fix metadata after conversion.

Building a future-proof music library

If you're cleaning up a collection that has APE, ALAC, FLAC, WAV, and who knows what else scattered across folders, this is a good moment to standardize. Pick FLAC as your archive format and convert everything to it. You can always generate MP3 copies for portable use, but having one lossless format across your entire library eliminates "will this play?" questions forever.

The conversion workflow is simple: gather all your non-FLAC lossless files, batch convert to FLAC, verify the metadata transferred, and archive. Keep the FLAC library on a backed-up drive. Generate MP3 copies (256 or 320 kbps) for your phone, car USB, or any device where storage is tight or FLAC support is uncertain.

This two-tier approach — FLAC masters for archiving, MP3 copies for daily use — is how most serious music collectors manage their libraries. The FLAC files are your permanent backup. If lossy formats evolve (MP3 gives way to Opus, for example), you can always re-encode from the lossless source without going back to the CDs.

Frequently asked questions

Does converting APE to FLAC lose quality?
No. Both are lossless codecs — the decoded PCM audio is bit-for-bit identical. You're just repackaging the same data with a different compression algorithm.

Why do people use APE if it's so incompatible?
APE was popular in the early 2000s, especially in Asian music communities, before FLAC became the dominant standard. It offers slightly better compression than FLAC (5-10% smaller files), which mattered more when hard drives were expensive. Today there's little reason to choose APE over FLAC.

Can VLC convert APE to FLAC?

Is FLAC really supported everywhere?
