About the CBZ Format
CBZ stands for Comic Book ZIP: page images, normally JPEG or PNG, sitting in an ordinary ZIP archive under a different extension. Because ZIP is openly specified and every operating system can already read it, CBZ became the format comic readers and digital libraries standardised on. Rename a CBZ to .zip and it opens in your file manager: the pages are just files, in order, with nothing proprietary in the way.
CBZ also carries the closest thing the format family has to metadata. ComicInfo.xml, a convention introduced by ComicRack rather than any standards body, sits alongside the images and records series, issue number, writer, artist and publication year. Readers that understand it build a browsable library from your files; readers that do not simply ignore the extra file. It is worth preserving when you reorganise a collection, because regenerating it by hand is tedious.
The thing to know before converting is that a CBZ is a book of pictures, not text. There are no words for a device to reflow, so converting to EPUB only works as fixed-layout EPUB, and an eReader without that support will render it poorly or not at all. PDF is the more dependable target when you need to read or print a comic outside a dedicated app, though it usually produces a larger file. Either way the page images are carried across at their original resolution and quality.
