Lossless Audio Explained: FLAC vs ALAC vs APE vs WAV

If you care about audio quality, you've run into 'lossless' formats — FLAC, ALAC, APE, WAV. They all preserve full CD-quality sound with no loss, so why are there four of them, and which should you actually use? Here's a clear breakdown.

What 'lossless' means

Lossless formats store audio without throwing any data away, so the sound is identical to the source — unlike MP3 or AAC, which are 'lossy' and discard detail to save space. The trade-off is size: lossless files are much larger. The four main formats differ mainly in compression efficiency and how widely they're supported.

The four lossless formats

FLAC

Open Source, gut komprimiert und fast überall unterstützt. Der De-facto-Standard für verlustfreie Musik.

ALAC

Apple verlustfrei. Gleiche Qualität wie FLAC, aber für das Apple-Ökosystem konzipiert und anderswo weniger unterstützt.

APE

Monkey's Audio. Compresses slightly smaller than FLAC but is niche and poorly supported.

WAV

Uncompressed. Maximum compatibility and ideal for editing, but the largest files with no metadata.

Which one should you use?

For a music library you want to keep and play across devices, FLAC is the best default — lossless quality with near-universal support. Choose ALAC if you live in the Apple ecosystem and use Apple Music. Choose WAV only for editing or when a tool specifically needs uncompressed audio. There's little reason to keep files in APE today given its poor support — converting them to FLAC keeps the quality while making them playable everywhere.

Sie haben bereits APE- oder ALAC-Dateien?

If your library is stuck in APE or ALAC and won't play on your devices, convert to FLAC to keep full lossless quality with far better compatibility — or to MP3 if you'd rather have small, portable files for everyday listening.

Lossless vs MP3: is it worth it?

FLAC, ALAC, APE, and WAV all deliver lossless quality; they differ in efficiency and support. FLAC is the best all-round choice, ALAC suits Apple users, WAV is for editing, and APE is best converted to FLAC. When you need portability, convert any of them to MP3.
