About the FB2 Format
FB2 (FictionBook 2.0) is an XML-based ebook format created in Russia that has become the dominant standard for digital books in Russia, Ukraine, and across Eastern Europe. Unlike formats that store visual presentation, FB2 uses semantic markup to describe the logical structure of a book — title pages, chapters, sections, epigraphs, poems, and citations are all encoded as distinct XML elements, making it exceptionally well-suited for fiction and literary works.
FB2 stores rich metadata including author biography, genre classification, series information, and cover images directly within the XML structure, making library management and cataloging straightforward. The format handles Cyrillic and Unicode text natively, ensuring proper rendering of Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, and other scripts. FB2 is supported by popular reading apps like FBReader, CoolReader, and Moon+ Reader, particularly on Android. While less common outside Eastern Europe, FB2 files can be converted to EPUB, PDF, or MOBI for use on international eReaders and Kindle devices.
