Understanding the Malaysia passport spec

Malaysia is the main size outlier in Southeast Asia: Jabatan Imigresen specifies 35×50mm, not the 35×45mm used almost everywhere else in the region, with the head 30-40mm from chin to crown on a plain white background. A booth or app set to the international standard produces a photo 5mm too short, which is the single most common reason Malaysian applicants are turned away, particularly those renewing from abroad, where local photo shops default to 35×45mm. The background requirement is also worth checking twice: older Malaysian specifications called for blue, and outdated guides still circulate, but current practice is white.

Where Malaysia passport photos are actually used

Because 35×50mm is taller than the standard frame, simply stretching a 35×45mm photo does not work: it distorts your face, and head height falls outside the 30-40mm range. The crop has to be made to the taller proportion from the original image. Note too that Imigresen counters photograph applicants on site as part of biometric capture, so a printed photo is mainly needed for renewals lodged abroad, for supporting documents and for offices where live capture is not available. Why does Malaysia use 35×50mm instead of 35×45mm?

Malaysia simply specifies a taller print than the ICAO-derived 35×45mm that most countries settled on. There is no shared standard forcing the two to match. The practical consequence is that photo shops outside Malaysia, and most passport photo booths, produce the wrong size unless you ask for Malaysian dimensions specifically.

Should the background be white or blue for a Malaysian passport photo?

White. Blue backgrounds came from an earlier specification and are still repeated in older guides and by some photo studios, but current Imigresen requirements call for plain white. If a studio offers you blue, ask them to reshoot on white.
