Switzerland is unusually generous on one point: the photograph may be up to twelve months old, where most countries insist on six. In practice many applicants never supply a print at all, because Swiss passports and identity cards are applied for online and the photograph is usually taken at the cantonal passport office when you attend to give your biometrics.

Where Switzerland passport photos are actually used
Accepting both grey and white makes Switzerland the most forgiving of the Alpine and Schengen group, a Swiss-spec photo generally satisfies German, French, Dutch, Italian and UK requirements if you choose grey, and Japanese, US and Asian ones if you choose white. The twelve-month window is worth remembering when a photo from an earlier application is still on file: it may be too old for a German or French submission while remaining valid for a Swiss one. Where you do need a print, check with your cantonal office first, since several photograph applicants on site.
