PSD to JPG: flattened onto white
The layer stack collapses to the composite, and anything transparent is filled with a solid colour, since JPG carries no alpha. For photographic work that trade is fine and the file becomes a fraction of the size. For a logo or a cutout, it is the conversion that silently puts a white rectangle behind your artwork.
Convert when the image is photographic and headed for upload, email or print proofing. If any part of the canvas is transparent, use PNG instead and avoid the background entirely.
