About the PSD Format
PSD is the Photoshop document format, and its purpose is to preserve work in progress rather than a finished image. A PSD keeps layers separate, along with masks, adjustment layers, layer effects, text that is still editable as text, and paths, everything needed to resume an edit exactly where it stopped.
All that structure makes PSD files large and difficult for other software to read fully; many applications that claim PSD support only read a flattened composite. That is essentially what conversion does: flattening the document into a single image. PNG preserves transparency and loses nothing in compression, which suits graphics and logos; JPG suits photographic work where file size matters. Always keep the PSD, once flattened, the layers cannot be recovered.
