Reasons to convert RM files
RM (RealMedia) was built for late-1990s streaming and barely plays anywhere today. Convert to MP4 to make old recordings watchable on modern devices.
RM files require RealPlayer, which is effectively obsolete. Converting to MP4 removes that dependency so the video just works.
Convert RM to MP4 or MOV for smooth import into current editing software, so archived footage can be re-cut and reused.
RM won’t upload to modern video sites or messaging apps. Convert to MP4 for universal sharing and streaming.
Migrate RM recordings to MP4 to keep them accessible for the long term, safe from disappearing codec support.
Convert RM video online, no desktop apps, no plugins. Files up to 100 MB are always free, and all videos are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
About the RM Format
RM is RealMedia, the format RealNetworks built for streaming audio and video over dial-up connections in the 1990s. It was genuinely ahead of its time, RealPlayer streamed video when most formats still expected a complete download, and it was optimised hard for very low bitrates.
That optimisation is the problem now. RM files were encoded for bandwidth no longer relevant, so the picture is usually small and heavily compressed, and support has almost entirely disappeared outside VLC and a few dedicated tools. Converting to MP4 makes the content accessible again on any device. Keep expectations realistic about quality: conversion preserves what the original encode kept, which with RM is often not much.
