About the TGA Format
TGA, or Truevision TARGA, dates from 1984 and was built for the first generation of high-colour graphics cards on the PC. It stores uncompressed or lightly RLE-compressed pixels with straightforward support for an alpha channel, and that simplicity is why it survived so long in games and 3D work as a texture format.
The trade-off is size. A TGA holds close to raw pixel data, so files are many times larger than a PNG of the same image, and its RLE compression only helps on images with large flat areas. PNG gives you lossless compression and the same alpha support at a fraction of the size, and is supported everywhere; JPG is the right target when the image is photographic and transparency does not matter.
