About the 3G2 Format
3G2 is the container the 3GPP2 standard defined for CDMA mobile networks, the counterpart to 3GP on GSM networks. It is a cut-down version of the MP4 container, trimmed for the bandwidth and processing limits of early-2000s phones, and usually carries H.263 or early H.264 video with AMR or AAC audio.
Files like these generally turn up as recordings from old handsets, often at resolutions well below anything a current screen expects. Because 3G2 is an MP4 relative, converting to MP4 is usually fast and can sometimes re-wrap the existing streams rather than re-encoding them, which avoids any quality loss. The low resolution of the original cannot be fixed by conversion, upscaling adds pixels, not detail.
