Image Won't Upload? How to Fix Every Common Size and Format Error
The upload button does nothing. Or it shows a red error with a message that might as well be in hieroglyphics. You've tried three different photos and they all fail. Before you throw your phone at the wall, let me walk you through every common image upload error and the exact fix for each one.
"File size exceeds the limit"
This is the #1 upload error. Your image is too many KB or MB for the form's limit. Modern phone cameras produce 3-8 MB photos, and most upload forms want under 200 KB or even under 50 KB. The fix is two steps: first resize to smaller pixel dimensions (this alone often cuts 80% of the file size), then compress the JPG to hit the exact target.
Common limits you'll encounter: Government exam forms (20-50 KB), passport applications (20-100 KB), social media uploads (varies, usually generous), email attachments (20-25 MB total). Always check the form's instructions for the specific limit.
"Invalid file format" or "Unsupported file type"
Most upload forms accept only JPG/JPEG. If your photo is PNG, HEIC, WebP, BMP, or any other format, it'll be rejected. iPhones save as HEIC by default — that's the most common cause. The fix: convert HEIC to JPG, or convert PNG to JPG. Don't just rename the file extension — that doesn't actually change the format and will cause corruption.
"Image dimensions do not match requirements"
Some forms validate exact pixel dimensions. IBPS wants exactly 200x230 pixels. UPSC wants a 4:5 ratio. If your photo is the wrong size, the upload fails even if the file size is correct.
