About the DIVX Format
DivX is a video codec that became famous around 1999, when it made it possible to fit a DVD-quality film onto a single CD. It is an MPEG-4 Part 2 implementation, and the files usually arrive in an AVI container, which is why a DivX file and an AVI file are often the same thing described two different ways.
DivX is efficient by the standards of its era and badly outclassed now: H.264 delivers similar quality at roughly half the size, and H.265 improves on that again. The bigger problem is playback, no browser plays DivX natively, phones generally refuse it, and smart TVs are inconsistent. Converting to MP4 with H.264 makes the file playable essentially everywhere, and usually smaller than the original.
