About the JFIF Format
JFIF is the JPEG File Interchange Format, and the distinction it draws confuses almost everyone. The JPEG standard specifies how to compress an image but not how to write it to a file; JFIF fills that gap. In practice virtually every .jpg you have ever opened is a JFIF file, the extension differs, the contents do not.
Files arrive with a .jfif extension largely by accident, often saved from a browser or email client that chose the formal name over the common one. Some applications then refuse them purely on the extension, despite being perfectly capable of decoding the image. Converting JFIF to JPG is effectively a rename and costs nothing in quality if handled without re-encoding; converting to PNG gives a lossless copy, though it cannot undo the JPEG compression already applied.
