About the output format

When plain text is the right output

Plain text strips formatting entirely — no fonts, no layout, no images. Convert to TXT when you need to pipe content into a script or CSV import, or when a legal / archival requirement specifies "no formatting". Also the right choice for extracting the substantive content from a PDF for OCR post-processing or text-analysis workflows.

Why Convert LIT to TXT

Opens on Every System

Plain text files open instantly on every operating system, programming environment, and device ever created. TXT is the most universally compatible file format in computing — nothing fails to read it.

Zero Formatting Dependencies

TXT files contain pure text with no fonts, styles, images, or macros. They never have compatibility issues, never carry viruses in macros, and never require specific software versions to open.

Minimal File Size

A TXT file contains only the characters you need with no overhead. A 10-page document might be just 20 KB as TXT compared to hundreds of KB as DOCX, making TXT ideal for storage and transfer.

Programming and Scripting Ready

TXT files are the foundation of configuration files, scripts, data exchange, and log files. Every programming language can read and write TXT natively without importing libraries or parsers.

Long-Term Archival

Plain text is the most durable digital format. TXT files created decades ago still open perfectly today. For content that must remain readable for years or centuries, TXT is the safest choice.

About the LIT Format

LIT is a proprietary ebook format developed by Microsoft for the Microsoft Reader application, first released in 2000. Based on a compressed HTML format derived from Microsoft's CHM (Compiled HTML Help) technology, LIT files supported ClearType font rendering, annotations, bookmarks, and text reflow. Microsoft integrated its own DRM system into the format to protect commercial ebook content purchased through retail partners.

Microsoft discontinued the Reader application and LIT format in 2012, making it a legacy format that is no longer supported by any actively maintained reading software. Ebooks purchased or created in LIT format can no longer be read natively on modern devices. Converting LIT files to EPUB, PDF, or MOBI is the only way to preserve access to these ebooks on current eReaders, tablets, and computers. DRM-free LIT files can be converted to modern formats, preserving text content, chapter structure, and basic formatting.
