About the M4V Format
M4V is Apple's variant of the MP4 container, used throughout iTunes and the Apple TV ecosystem. Structurally it is close enough to MP4 that renaming the extension often works, and it typically holds H.264 video with AAC audio.
The distinction that matters is DRM. M4V files bought from the iTunes Store carry Apple's FairPlay protection, and those cannot be converted, the encryption is the point of them. Files without DRM, such as your own exports from iMovie or Final Cut, convert to MP4 trivially and often without re-encoding, since the streams inside are already what MP4 expects. If a conversion fails on an M4V, DRM is almost always the explanation rather than a problem with the file.
