About the XVID Format
Xvid is the open-source answer to DivX, created in 2001 after a dispute over the closed-source direction of its predecessor. Both implement MPEG-4 Part 2, both typically ship inside AVI containers, and files from one usually play in a decoder for the other.
Xvid was widely used through the 2000s and that legacy is the issue: an Xvid file carries a codec nothing modern targets. Browsers will not play it, mobile devices mostly will not, and editing software increasingly treats it as a curiosity. Converting to MP4 with H.264 solves compatibility and generally reduces size at the same visual quality. Expect no quality gain from the conversion itself, re-encoding cannot recover detail the original encode discarded.
