7Z (7-Zip Archive) is an open-source archive format created by Igor Pavlov in 1999 for the 7-Zip compression program. It uses the LZMA2 compression algorithm, which achieves 30-70% better compression ratios than ZIP on most file types. This makes 7Z the preferred choice when minimizing archive size is the top priority, particularly for large software distributions and data backups.
Beyond superior compression, 7Z supports AES-256 encryption with the option to encrypt file headers as well, hiding even the names of archived files. It also supports solid compression, which compresses multiple files together as a single data stream for even better ratios. The main drawback is that 7Z requires 7-Zip or a compatible third-party tool to create and extract, as it is not natively supported by most operating systems.
