About the AI (Adobe Illustrator) Format
AI is Adobe Illustrator's native format, and it stores artwork as vectors, mathematical descriptions of paths, curves and fills rather than a grid of pixels. That is why an AI logo can be scaled to a billboard with no loss of sharpness. Since version 9, AI files have been PDF-compatible, which is why some non-Adobe applications can open them at all.
Outside Illustrator, support is limited and inconsistent, and AI files commonly depend on fonts and linked images that may not travel with the file.
