Since Illustrator 9, a .ai file saved with PDF compatibility on is a PDF — the same syntax, with Illustrator’s private data in a section readers ignore. That makes this the lightest conversion on the site: the artwork stays vector, fonts and paths survive, and nothing is rasterised. Files saved with PDF compatibility switched off are not readable this way and need Illustrator.
