MOV vs MP4: Which Video Format Is Better?

MOV and MP4 are both video container formats, meaning they are wrappers that hold video, audio, and metadata inside a single file. They look interchangeable at first glance — both can contain the same H.264 or H.265 video codec, both support stereo and surround audio, both play on most modern devices. But the differences matter when you need your video to actually work everywhere.

What Is MOV?

MOV is Apple's video container format, developed as part of the QuickTime framework in 1991. It was the dominant video format on Mac for decades and remains the default output format for several Apple products:
  • iPhone and iPad — screen recordings and videos shot in the Camera app are saved as MOV.
  • QuickTime Player — screen recordings on Mac produce MOV files.
  • Final Cut Pro — exports to MOV by default for maximum quality.
MOV supports a wide range of codecs including H.264, H.265 (HEVC), ProRes, and Apple's older codecs. ProRes support is a big reason why professional video editors on Mac prefer MOV — ProRes is an editing-optimized codec that preserves quality through multiple rounds of editing and re-encoding.

What Is MP4?

MP4 (formally MPEG-4 Part 14) is an international standard developed by the Moving Picture Experts Group (MPEG). It was designed as a universal container format and has become exactly that — MP4 is the most widely supported video format on the planet.
  • Web — every modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) plays MP4 natively.
  • Android — the default video format on Android devices.
  • Social media — YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, and Facebook all prefer or require MP4.
  • Streaming — Netflix, Disney+, and most streaming services deliver video as MP4/fMP4.
MP4 supports H.264, H.265, AV1, and AAC audio. It is technically based on Apple's QuickTime format (the MPEG standard borrowed heavily from it), which is why the two formats are so similar internally.

Key Differences

Despite their similarities, there are practical differences that affect which format you should use:
  • Compatibility — MP4 works everywhere. MOV works reliably on Apple devices and most modern software, but some older Windows applications, Android apps, and web platforms either reject MOV or handle it poorly.
  • File size — for the same video with the same codec and settings, MOV and MP4 files are virtually identical in size. The container overhead is negligible. Any size difference you see is due to different default codec settings, not the container format itself.
  • Codec support — MOV supports Apple ProRes, which MP4 does not (in practice). If you need ProRes for professional editing workflows, you need MOV.
  • Metadata — MOV can carry richer Apple-specific metadata (Live Photo data, spatial audio metadata for Apple Vision Pro). MP4 has its own metadata standard that is more universally supported.
  • Streaming — MP4 supports progressive download and adaptive streaming (DASH) out of the box. MOV can be used for HTTP Live Streaming (HLS) but MP4 is the more common choice.

When to Use MOV

MOV is the right choice in a few specific scenarios:
  • Professional video editing on Mac — if you are editing in Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Premiere Pro and your workflow uses ProRes, keep your files as MOV throughout the editing process. Convert to MP4 only for the final delivery.
  • Apple ecosystem workflows — if the video will only be viewed on Mac, iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV, MOV works perfectly and preserves all Apple-specific metadata.
  • Screen recordings — QuickTime screen recordings are MOV by default. If you are only sharing with other Mac users, there is no need to convert.

When to Use MP4

MP4 is the right choice for everything else — which is most situations:
  • Sharing on social media — YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and every other platform accept MP4. Some have inconsistent MOV support.
  • Sharing with non-Apple users — if the recipient might be on Windows or Android, MP4 is the safe bet.
  • Uploading to websites — HTML5 video supports MP4 natively. MOV requires additional handling.
  • Email attachments — MP4 is universally recognized. MOV attachments may show as generic file icons on non-Apple devices.
  • Archiving — MP4 is an international standard that will remain playable for decades. MOV's long-term support depends on Apple continuing to maintain it.

Rule of Thumb

If the video stays within the Apple ecosystem and you need ProRes, use MOV. For everything else, use MP4. When in doubt, MP4 is always the safer choice.

Quality: Does Converting MOV to MP4 Lose Quality?

It depends on how the conversion is done. If the MOV and MP4 use the same codec (both H.264, for example), the conversion can be done by remuxing — simply repackaging the video and audio streams into a different container without re-encoding. Remuxing is instant and lossless; not a single pixel changes.
If the codecs differ (for example, converting a ProRes MOV to an H.264 MP4), the video must be re-encoded. Re-encoding always loses some quality, though at high bitrates the difference is invisible. The key is to use a high enough bitrate or quality setting during the conversion.
