About the MPG Format
MPG files hold MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 video, the standards behind Video CD and DVD respectively. MPEG-2 in particular ran the broadcast and DVD world for two decades, which is why so much archive footage and so many home-recorded discs exist in this format.
The format is extremely compatible with old players and quite inefficient by current standards, an MPEG-2 file is typically several times larger than an H.264 encode of the same material at the same quality. Converting to MP4 usually cuts the file size substantially while making it playable in browsers and on phones. For DVD-sourced footage, interlacing is worth attention: material shot for television is often interlaced, and deinterlacing during conversion avoids combing artefacts on progressive screens.
