About the AC3 Format
AC3 (Audio Codec 3), also known as Dolby Digital, is a surround sound audio format developed by Dolby Laboratories. It supports up to 5.1 channel audio (five full-range channels plus a subwoofer) at bitrates typically between 192 and 640 kbps. AC3 has been the standard audio format for DVD-Video, Blu-ray discs, digital television broadcasts, and cinema since the mid-1990s.
