What to expect when converting MOBI to EPUB

Typical file-size change
0–20% larger
Example

A 500 KB MOBI typically becomes 500 – 600 KB as EPUB.

Quality: Chapter structure and text preserved cleanly. Kindle-specific formatting (page-numbering, X-Ray data) is lost.

Best for: reading on non-Kindle devices — Apple Books, Kobo, Nook, Google Play Books all support EPUB natively.

Avoid when: you only read on Kindle — MOBI/AZW3 is the native Kindle format.

Tip: Modern Kindles (post-2022) also support EPUB via Send-to-Kindle, so this conversion is increasingly optional.

About the output format

When EPUB is the right output

EPUB is the open ebook standard — reflows text, supports tables of contents and metadata, works on every e-reader except Kindle (which uses MOBI/AZW3 natively but converts EPUB on upload). Convert to EPUB when publishing to Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, or shipping direct-to-reader PDFs / DOCX manuscripts.

MOBI to EPUB: migrating to the open standard

MOBI's internal structure is HTML-based, similar to EPUB, but uses Amazon's proprietary packaging and index format. The conversion extracts the HTML content and images from the MOBI container, reconstructs chapter structure from the MOBI's index records, applies CSS formatting, and repackages everything as a standard EPUB. DRM-protected MOBI files (purchased from Amazon) cannot be converted — the content is encrypted with the device's serial number.

When to convert MOBI to EPUB

Convert MOBI to EPUB for reading on non-Kindle e-readers (Kobo, Nook, Apple Books) and reading apps that support EPUB but not MOBI. EPUB is the universal ebook standard supported by virtually all reading platforms except legacy Kindle.

About the MOBI Format

MOBI is an ebook format originally developed by Mobipocket SA and later acquired by Amazon in 2005 for use on Kindle devices. Based on the Open eBook standard with proprietary extensions, MOBI supports reflowable content, bookmarks, annotations, and basic formatting including images, tables, and text styles. It became the primary format for personal documents and sideloaded content on Kindle eReaders, working on every Kindle model ever produced.

Amazon has since deprecated MOBI in favor of the more capable AZW3 (KF8) and KFX formats, which support enhanced typesetting, embedded fonts, and responsive layouts. As of 2022, Amazon's Send to Kindle service no longer accepts MOBI files for email delivery. However, MOBI remains widely used for legacy Kindle compatibility and is still supported by many third-party reading apps. Converting MOBI to EPUB allows reading on non-Kindle devices, while converting to AZW3 provides a modern Kindle reading experience.

MOBI to EPUB FAQ

Quick answers about compatibility, quality, metadata handling, and the most common reasons to convert MOBI files to EPUB.

Can I convert MOBI books to EPUB for my Kindle or Kobo?

Yes. Upload your MOBI ebook and iFormat converts it to EPUB with chapter structure, cover art, and formatting preserved. Load the EPUB onto your Kindle, Kobo, Nook, or any eReader that supports the format.

How to convert MOBI to EPUB without losing the table of contents

Chapter navigation, the cover image, and text formatting all carry over during conversion. The EPUB has proper chapter links so you can jump between sections on your eReader just like the original MOBI.

Can I convert multiple MOBI ebooks to EPUB at once?

Yes — upload a batch of MOBI files and iFormat converts them all to EPUB. Each book downloads separately or as a ZIP, so you can convert an entire library in one session.

Does the text still reflow after converting to EPUB?

Yes — EPUB keeps text reflowable, so it adapts to any screen size and font setting on your eReader rather than being locked to a fixed page like a PDF.

Which reader is EPUB for?

EPUB is a reflowable ebook format best for Kobo, Apple Books, and Nook. Convert your MOBI to EPUB when your eReader or app opens EPUB more reliably, so the whole library works on one device.

Is there a file size limit for MOBI to EPUB conversion?

The free plan supports files up to 50 MB, which covers the large majority of MOBI files. For longer or higher-resolution files, Starter raises the limit to 100 MB, Plus to 1 GB, and Pro to 5 GB.

Why convert MOBI to EPUB?

EPUB is the open standard supported by Apple Books, Kobo, Nook, Google Play Books, and every reader app outside the Kindle ecosystem. If you bought a book in MOBI and want to read it on a non-Kindle device, EPUB is the bridge.

Will my Kindle highlights and annotations transfer?

No. Kindle stores annotations in a separate proprietary format tied to the device/account, not in the MOBI file itself. The converted EPUB contains the book content but no annotations.
