Australia Time Zones Explained: AEST, ACST, AWST, and Daylight Saving

The three standard time zones
AEST — Australian Eastern Standard Time (UTC+10)
Used by: New South Wales (Sydney), Victoria (Melbourne), Tasmania (Hobart), Queensland (Brisbane), and the Australian Capital Territory (Canberra). This is the zone most people mean when they say "Australian time" — it covers the largest population centres.

ACST — Australian Central Standard Time (UTC+9:30)
Used by: South Australia (Adelaide) and the Northern Territory (Darwin). Note the 30-minute offset — Australia is one of the few countries that uses half-hour time zones. This means that when it is 3:00 PM in Sydney, it is 2:30 PM in Adelaide.

AWST — Australian Western Standard Time (UTC+8)
Used by: Western Australia (Perth). Perth is two hours behind Sydney and shares its UTC offset with cities like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Kuala Lumpur.

The 30-minute offset catches everyone off guard
Central Australia is UTC+9:30, not UTC+9 or UTC+10. If you schedule a meeting assuming whole-hour offsets, you will be 30 minutes early or late. Always double-check when dealing with Adelaide, Darwin, or Broken Hill.
Daylight saving time
Not all of Australia observes daylight saving time (DST), and this is where it gets confusing. DST runs from the first Sunday in October to the first Sunday in April (Australian summer). During DST, clocks move forward one hour.
AEDT — Australian Eastern Daylight Time (UTC+11)
Used by: NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, and ACT during summer. Queensland does not observe DST, so during summer Brisbane stays on AEST (UTC+10) while Sydney moves to AEDT (UTC+11). This means Brisbane and Sydney are in the same time zone for half the year and one hour apart for the other half.

Used by: South Australia during summer. The Northern Territory does not observe DST, so Darwin stays on ACST (UTC+9:30) year-round while Adelaide moves to ACDT (UTC+10:30) in summer.

Which states observe DST?

Queensland's refusal to observe DST is a long-standing political decision. It means that during summer, the Gold Coast (Queensland) and Tweed Heads (NSW) — towns that are literally next to each other — are in different time zones.
The Lord Howe Island exception
Lord Howe Island, a small island about 600 km east of Sydney, has its own time zone: LHST (UTC+10:30) in standard time and LHDT (UTC+11) in daylight saving time. Instead of shifting clocks by one hour, Lord Howe shifts by only 30 minutes. It is one of only a few places in the world that uses a 30-minute DST shift.

Best times to call Australia from the US
If you are on US Eastern Time and need to reach someone in Sydney, your best window is 6:00–8:00 AM ET (8:00–10:00 PM AEST). For Perth, try 8:00–10:00 AM ET (8:00–10:00 PM AWST). Mornings in the US overlap with evenings in Australia.

- Always confirm the state, not just the city — "Australia" is not enough
- Check whether DST is currently in effect (October to April)
