Daylight Saving Time (DST) means clocks move forward one hour in spring and back one hour in autumn. The exact date varies by country — the US, UK, EU, Canada, and Australia all change on different weekends. Here are the confirmed dates for 2027.
2027 DST Dates at a Glance
United States: Spring forward March 14, 2027 — Fall back November 7, 2027
United Kingdom: Spring forward March 28, 2027 — Fall back October 31, 2027
European Union: Spring forward March 28, 2027 — Fall back October 31, 2027
Canada: Spring forward March 14, 2027 — Fall back November 7, 2027
Australia: Spring forward October 3, 2027 — Fall back April 4, 2027
United States — Daylight Saving Time 2027
The US follows the Energy Policy Act of 2005. DST begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November.
Spring forward: Sunday, March 14, 2027 at 2:00 AM — clocks move to 3:00 AM.
Fall back: Sunday, November 7, 2027 at 2:00 AM — clocks move to 1:00 AM. You gain an extra hour of sleep.
States that do not observe DST: Arizona (except the Navajo Nation) and Hawaii. These states stay on standard time all year.
United Kingdom — Daylight Saving Time 2027 (BST)
The UK switches to British Summer Time (BST) on the last Sunday of March and returns to GMT on the last Sunday of October.
Spring forward: Sunday, March 28, 2027 at 1:00 AM GMT — clocks move to 2:00 AM BST.
Fall back: Sunday, October 31, 2027 at 2:00 AM BST — clocks move to 1:00 AM GMT.
European Union — Daylight Saving Time 2027 (CEST)
EU member states (including Germany, France, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Poland) all change on the same day as the UK — last Sunday of March and last Sunday of October.
Spring forward: Sunday, March 28, 2027 at 2:00 AM local time.
Fall back: Sunday, October 31, 2027 at 3:00 AM CEST → 2:00 AM CET.
Note: The EU has discussed abolishing DST, but no final decision has been implemented as of 2027. All EU member states still observe the change.
Canada — Daylight Saving Time 2027
Canada follows the same schedule as the US in most provinces — second Sunday of March and first Sunday of November.
Spring forward: Sunday, March 14, 2027. Fall back: Sunday, November 7, 2027.
Exceptions: Saskatchewan observes Central Standard Time (CST) all year. Most of British Columbia, Alberta, Manitoba, Ontario, and Quebec follow the US dates.
Australia — Daylight Saving Time 2027
Australia's DST runs during the Southern Hemisphere summer — the opposite of the Northern Hemisphere. Not all Australian states observe DST.
Spring forward (start of DST): Sunday, October 3, 2027.
Fall back (end of DST): Sunday, April 4, 2027.
States that observe DST: New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Australian Capital Territory. States that do not observe DST: Queensland, Western Australia, Northern Territory.
Why Do Different Countries Change on Different Days?
The US changed its DST rules in 2007, moving the start date earlier (second Sunday of March instead of first Sunday of April). The UK and EU continue to use the last Sunday of March. This creates a 2-week window in spring (and a 1-week window in autumn) when the time difference between the US and UK is different from usual.
For example: between March 14 and March 28, 2027, New York will be 4 hours behind London (instead of the usual 5). This catches a lot of people off guard when scheduling transatlantic meetings.
Scheduling Across Time Zones During DST Transitions
Use a time zone converter to check the exact current offset before scheduling international calls during the transition weeks. The offset changes for 2 weeks in spring while the US has changed but the UK/EU has not.
Do Smartphones Update Automatically?
Yes — iPhones and Android phones update automatically as long as Set Automatically (iPhone: Settings → General → Date & Time) or Automatic date & time (Android: Settings → General Management → Date and time) is enabled. The clock changes at exactly 2:00 AM local time.
Computers (Windows and Mac) also update automatically when connected to the internet. Standalone alarm clocks, car clocks, and some microwaves do not update automatically and must be changed manually.
