Portugal's Timezone System Explained
Portugal (mainland) uses Western European Time (WET, UTC+0) in winter and Western European Summer Time (WEST, UTC+1) in summer — aligning Portugal with the UK rather than neighboring Spain despite their shared Iberian peninsula. The Azores use UTC−1 (standard) / UTC+0 (summer); Madeira uses UTC+0 / UTC+1, same as the mainland.
DST in 2025: clocks spring forward at 1:00 AM on Sunday 30 March and fall back at 2:00 AM on Sunday 26 October, following EU convention. In summer, Lisbon and London are on the same clock.
Key differences from Lisbon (WET): London is on the same time in winter. Madrid (CET) is 1 hour ahead. New York (EST) is 5 hours behind in winter. During WEST (summer), Lisbon is the same as London's BST.
