About the ARW Format
ARW is Sony's raw format, written by the Alpha series from the A7 and A1 full-frame bodies down to the compact RX line. It holds the unprocessed sensor readout, so exposure, white balance and noise handling remain fully adjustable after the shot.
Sony iterates hardware quickly and the ARW format changes with it, including lossy and lossless compressed variants on recent bodies. The practical result is that a file from a new camera may not open in a photo editor that is a year old. Converting to DNG sidesteps that problem without throwing away editing latitude. For delivery, TIFF keeps full colour depth and JPEG keeps file sizes manageable, but both finalise the interpretation of the raw data.
