About the RW2 Format
RW2 is the raw format Panasonic writes on its Lumix cameras. Each file holds the sensor readout before any demosaicing, white balance or sharpening has been applied, alongside a JPEG preview that cameras and file browsers use for thumbnails. Because the data is unprocessed, a RW2 carries far more highlight and shadow latitude than the JPEG shot beside it, typically two to three stops of recoverable detail.
The cost is compatibility. RW2 is a moving target: Panasonic revises the format with new sensors, so an older photo editor often cannot open files from a recent body until its raw library is updated. Converting to DNG, TIFF or JPEG gives you a file any application will read. Keep the original RW2 if you may re-edit later, since conversion to JPEG bakes in the white balance and tone curve permanently.
