How to convert NEF files online
Convert Nikon NEF RAW photos to JPG, PNG, or TIFF online.
-
1
Upload your NEF photos
Drag and drop NEF files from your Nikon camera. The converter handles full-resolution sensor data, embedded previews, and EXIF metadata from all modern Nikon bodies.
-
2
Select your target format
Choose JPG for quick sharing, PNG for lossless transparency, or TIFF for professional editing and print production. The camera white balance is applied during decoding, so the colours look as the camera intended.
-
3
Download your images
Save converted photos individually or as a batch ZIP. Resolution and colour accuracy are kept. A RAW file is decoded from sensor data and the output is built from the finished pixels, so EXIF and the embedded colour profile do not carry over. Keep the RAW if you need them. Uploads are securely deleted within 1 hour.

Reasons to convert NEF files
NEF is Nikon’s proprietary RAW format that requires Nikon NX Studio or Adobe tools to open. Converting to JPG or PNG makes your photos accessible on any device, browser, or operating system.
Social media, messaging apps, and email clients do not support NEF files. Converting to JPG creates compact, universally compatible photos ready for instant sharing.
NEF files from high-resolution Nikon bodies (D850, Z8, Z9) can be 45-80 MB each. Converting processed photos to JPG reclaims gigabytes of storage on hard drives and cloud accounts.
Convert NEF to TIFF for print-shop submissions that require maximum colour depth and resolution. TIFF preserves the full tonal range captured by Nikon’s sensor.
NEF is tied to Nikon’s ecosystem. Converting to TIFF or PNG future-proofs your photo archive in open formats that will remain readable regardless of Nikon’s software roadmap.
Convert NEF files online, no Photoshop, no plugins, no downloads. Files up to 100 MB are always free, and converted files are deleted from our servers within 1 hour.
About the NEF Format
NEF, short for Nikon Electronic Format, is the raw format Nikon has used since the late 1990s across its DSLR and Z-series cameras. It stores the sensor data largely unprocessed, together with the camera settings applied as instructions rather than baked into the pixels, which is why changing white balance on a NEF costs nothing in quality.
NEF is one of the better-supported raw formats, but it is not a single stable thing: 12-bit and 14-bit variants exist, compression differs between bodies, and Nikon's newer high-efficiency raw modes are a different beast again. Converting to DNG normalises all of that into one documented format. TIFF is the right target when you need a finished file that keeps 16-bit colour depth for printing, and JPEG when size matters more than further editing.
