You need to upload a photo and the form says "maximum 100KB." Your image is 3 MB. You need to shrink it by 97% without making it look like it was faxed in 1998. This is one of the most common image tasks on the internet, and it is surprisingly easy once you understand how JPG compression works and how to control it.
Why 100KB? Common situations
- Government form uploads — visa applications, passport portals, university admissions, and civil service exam forms frequently cap file sizes at 100KB, 200KB, or 50KB
- Email attachments — some corporate email servers strip or reject attachments over a certain size, especially when sending to older systems
- Website optimization — hero images and thumbnails need to be small for fast page loads, and 100KB is a common performance target
- Online application portals — job applications, insurance claims, and banking KYC uploads often have strict size limits
Step 1: Reduce the image dimensions first
This is the single most effective way to reduce file size. A 4000x3000 pixel photo from a phone camera contains 12 million pixels. A 100KB file at reasonable quality can hold roughly 800x600 to 1200x900 pixels. If you try to compress a full-resolution photo down to 100KB without resizing, the quality will be terrible.
What to do: Resize the image to the dimensions you actually need. If the upload form specifies dimensions (e.g., 600x600 for a profile photo), resize to exactly that. If no dimensions are specified, try 1024 pixels on the longest side — this is large enough to look sharp on screen but small enough to compress easily.
Step 2: Compress to your target size
After resizing, use a JPG compressor to reduce the file to 100KB or less. The

The quality slider trick

For most photos, quality 65-75 hits the sweet spot for getting under 100KB with no visible degradation.
Step 3: Check the result
After compressing, verify two things: the file size is under your target (right-click the file, check properties), and the image still looks acceptable. If it looks blurry or blocky, go back and resize to slightly larger dimensions with slightly higher compression — sometimes 900px at quality 70 looks better than 600px at quality 85.

Tips for hitting exact file sizes
- Resize before compressing. Dimensions have a bigger impact on file size than quality settings. A 4000px image at quality 20 looks worse and is larger than a 1000px image at quality 80.
- Remove EXIF data. Camera metadata (GPS, camera model, settings) adds 10-50KB to every photo. Most compressors strip it automatically.
- Simpler images compress better. A photo of a blue sky compresses to a much smaller file than a photo of a crowded market at the same quality setting, because there is less detail to encode.
- Try PNG for graphics. If your image is a logo, screenshot, or graphic with flat colours and text, PNG might actually be smaller than JPG. JPG is designed for photographs.
Avoid over-compression
Compressing a JPG, then compressing the result again, then compressing that again — each round degrades the image further. Always start from the original, full-quality file and compress once to your target. If you need to adjust, go back to the original.
