EST to IST: US to India Time Conversion Cheat Sheet

If you work with colleagues, clients, or vendors in India from the US East Coast, you are constantly doing the same mental math: "What time is it in India right now?" The conversion is not hard once you know the offset, but the half-hour difference and the Daylight Saving Time shift make it just tricky enough to get wrong.

The Basic Offset

IST (India Standard Time) is UTC+5:30. EST (Eastern Standard Time) is UTC-5. The difference between them is 10 hours and 30 minutes. IST is ahead, so to convert EST to IST, you add 10:30.
India does not observe Daylight Saving Time. The US does. When the US switches to EDT (Eastern Daylight Time, UTC-4) from March to November, the gap shrinks to 9 hours and 30 minutes.

Quick Formula

Winter (EST): IST = EST + 10:30
Summer (EDT): IST = EDT + 9:30

24-Hour Conversion Table: EST to IST

This table shows the conversion during EST (winter, November to March). Add 10 hours and 30 minutes to EST to get IST.
  • 12:00 AM EST (midnight) = 10:30 AM IST
  • 1:00 AM EST = 11:30 AM IST
  • 2:00 AM EST = 12:30 PM IST
  • 3:00 AM EST = 1:30 PM IST
  • 4:00 AM EST = 2:30 PM IST
  • 5:00 AM EST = 3:30 PM IST
  • 6:00 AM EST = 4:30 PM IST
  • 7:00 AM EST = 5:30 PM IST
  • 8:00 AM EST = 6:30 PM IST
  • 9:00 AM EST = 7:30 PM IST
  • 10:00 AM EST = 8:30 PM IST
  • 11:00 AM EST = 9:30 PM IST
  • 12:00 PM EST (noon) = 10:30 PM IST
  • 1:00 PM EST = 11:30 PM IST
  • 2:00 PM EST = 12:30 AM IST (next day)
  • 3:00 PM EST = 1:30 AM IST (next day)
  • 4:00 PM EST = 2:30 AM IST (next day)
  • 5:00 PM EST = 3:30 AM IST (next day)

EDT to IST (Summer)

During EDT (March to November), subtract one hour from the winter IST equivalents above, or add 9:30 to EDT:
  • 8:00 AM EDT = 5:30 PM IST
  • 9:00 AM EDT = 6:30 PM IST
  • 10:00 AM EDT = 7:30 PM IST
  • 11:00 AM EDT = 8:30 PM IST
  • 12:00 PM EDT = 9:30 PM IST
The summer offset is actually more favourable for meetings — the gap is 30 minutes shorter, giving you a slightly wider window where both sides are in working hours.

Best Meeting Times for US-India Teams

The biggest challenge with US-India collaboration is the minimal overlap of standard working hours. When it is 9 AM in New York, it is already 7:30 PM in India. By the time India starts its workday at 9:30 AM IST, it is 11 PM EST in the US.
The sweet spot for meetings is:
  • 8:00-10:00 AM EST / 6:30-8:30 PM IST (winter) — early morning for the US team, early evening for the India team. Both sides are alert and available.
  • 8:00-10:30 AM EDT / 5:30-8:00 PM IST (summer) — the summer offset gives you a slightly wider window.
Avoid scheduling past 10:30 AM EST if the India team has families — that pushes their side past 9 PM IST. And avoid asking the US team to join before 7 AM EST unless absolutely necessary.

Tips for Remote Teams Spanning US and India

Having worked across this time zone gap, here are practical strategies that reduce friction:
  • Designate overlap hours. Block 8:30-10:00 AM EST (7:00-8:30 PM IST in winter) as the team's shared meeting window. Keep the rest of each side's day meeting-free for focused work.
  • Use async communication by default. Slack messages, recorded Loom videos, and documented decisions in shared docs let both sides contribute during their own working hours.
  • Record every meeting. If someone cannot attend the overlap window, they can watch the recording during their morning and leave questions for the next overlap.
  • Alternate the inconvenience. If the US team always takes the early call, eventually switch to an occasional late-evening US call so the India team gets a morning slot.
  • Put the time zone in calendar invites. Always include both times: "Daily standup — 9:00 AM EST / 7:30 PM IST." This eliminates conversion errors.

Common Pitfalls

The two most common mistakes when converting EST to IST:
  • Forgetting the DST shift. From March to November, the US is on EDT (UTC-4), not EST (UTC-5). The gap with IST is 9:30, not 10:30. If you use the winter offset during summer, every meeting will be an hour off.
  • Confusing IST abbreviations. IST can mean India Standard Time (UTC+5:30), Israel Standard Time (UTC+2), or Irish Standard Time (UTC+1). If you are communicating with someone who might be in Israel or Ireland, spell out "India Standard Time" or use the city name (Mumbai, Delhi) to be safe.
To avoid manual conversion entirely, use a dedicated EST to IST converter that handles the DST offset automatically and shows both times side by side.
