How to Convert Camera RAW to JPG (Canon, Nikon, Sony, Fujifilm)
You plug your camera's SD card into your laptop and the photos show up as .CR3, .NEF, .ARW, or .RAF files. You double-click one and your computer either opens it slowly, opens it in an unexpected app, or tells you it doesn't recognise the format. Your cousin asks you to send some photos from the family gathering and you can't just email a 40 MB RAW file — their phone would choke on it even if it could open it.
RAW files are the unprocessed sensor data from your camera. They contain vastly more information than a JPG — 12 or 14 bits per channel versus JPG's 8, plus uncompressed colour data that gives you room to recover shadows and highlights in editing. But they're big, they're proprietary, and they don't work anywhere except in photo editing software that specifically supports them.
RAW formats by camera brand
Every camera manufacturer uses their own RAW format. This isn't just branding — the internal data structure reflects each company's sensor design and processing pipeline:

Nikon — NEF (Nikon Electronic Format). Used across the entire Nikon lineup from the D1 (1999) through the current Z-series mirrorless cameras (Z6 III, Z8, Z9, Zf). NEF supports both lossless compressed and uncompressed RAW data. The Nikon Z9 also offers NRAW, a high-efficiency RAW variant.
Sony — ARW (Alpha RAW). Used on all Sony Alpha cameras including the A7 IV, A7R V, A6700, A7C II, and the entire ZV vlogging lineup. Older Sony cameras used SR2 and SRF, but anything from the last decade is ARW.
Fujifilm — RAF (RAW Fujifilm). The RAF format encodes data from Fuji's X-Trans sensor array, which uses a different colour filter pattern than the standard Bayer filter used by Canon, Nikon, and Sony. This makes Fuji RAW files slightly trickier for third-party software to process — the demosaicing algorithm is different.
Others — Panasonic uses RW2, Olympus/OM System uses ORF, Pentax uses PEF/DNG, Hasselblad uses 3FR. Adobe's DNG (Digital Negative) is an open RAW format that some cameras (Leica, Google Pixel, some Hasselblads) write natively.

darktable — free and open source. Handles all major RAW formats. The learning curve is steeper than Lightroom but the capabilities are comparable. Available on Windows, macOS, and Linux.
RawTherapee — free and open source. More technical interface, excellent detail extraction algorithms. Good for landscape photography where you want to pull maximum detail from every pixel.

Brand-specific conversion tips
Canon CR3 — CR3 files from recent Canon bodies (R5, R5 II, R6 III, R7, R8, R10, R50, R100) require Lightroom 7.3+ or Camera Raw 15.3+ for full support. If your software can't open a CR3, update it — or if you're on an older perpetual license version, Canon's free Digital Photo Professional (DPP) always supports the latest Canon bodies.
Nikon NEF — Nikon's free NX Studio (replaced the older ViewNX-i / Capture NX-D) handles NEF conversion and basic editing. The Picture Control profiles (Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Flat) embedded in the NEF are applied by Nikon's software but interpreted slightly differently by Lightroom and Capture One. Sony ARW — Sony's free Imaging Edge Desktop app converts ARW files with Sony's colour science intact. Third-party tools may render Sony colours differently, especially the reds and oranges which are notoriously tricky in Sony ARW — the reds can shift towards orange in some RAW processors if Creative Look profiles aren't applied correctly.
Fujifilm RAF — Fuji's X-Trans sensor uses a different colour filter array than Bayer sensors. Some older versions of Lightroom (and darktable) produce "worm" artefacts in fine detail areas with X-Trans files — a known demosaicing issue that's mostly fixed in current versions but still surfaces occasionally. Capture One handles X-Trans files best. Fuji's free X RAW STUDIO app can batch-convert RAF files using the camera itself as the processing engine (connected via USB), applying Fuji's film simulation recipes with perfect accuracy.
Batch conversion: handling a whole shoot
If you've shot 500 RAW files at a wedding or event and need JPGs for all of them, batch conversion saves hours. Frequently asked questions
Does converting RAW to JPG lose quality?
Converting to JPG introduces lossy compression, so there is a small quality reduction compared to the RAW data. At JPG quality 92 or higher, the difference is invisible to the human eye. The bigger loss is the editing flexibility — once it's a JPG, you can't recover highlights and shadows the way you can with RAW.
Can I convert RAW to PNG instead?
Yes, but there's rarely a reason to. PNG is lossless but produces enormous files for photographs (30–50 MB per image at full resolution). JPG at quality 92 is visually identical and 10x smaller. PNG makes sense for graphics with transparency, not photos.
Why does my converted JPG look different from the camera preview?
Your camera applies its own processing (colour profile, contrast, sharpening) to the preview it shows on the LCD. Third-party RAW converters start from the raw sensor data and apply their own interpretation. This is why the same NEF file can look different in Lightroom versus Capture One versus darktable. My computer can't open .CR3 files — what do I do?
