PDF to EPUB — Fixed-layout book → e-reader-friendly reflowable
PDF → EPUB is the "make this book comfortable to read on a Kindle / Kobo / phone" conversion. Fixed-layout PDFs on a 6-inch e-reader require constant zoom and pan; EPUB reflows text to fit the screen at any size. Conversion quality depends on the source: text-based PDFs convert cleanly; heavily-formatted books with sidebars and pull-quotes may need manual cleanup after.
About the output format
When EPUB is the right output
EPUB is the open ebook standard — reflows text, supports tables of contents and metadata, works on every e-reader except Kindle (which uses MOBI/AZW3 natively but converts EPUB on upload). Convert to EPUB when publishing to Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play Books, or shipping direct-to-reader PDFs / DOCX manuscripts.
Turn a PDF into a reflowable EPUB
Escape the fixed-page layout of PDF. Get a book that resizes text to fit your screen and remembers where you left off.
1
Upload your PDF
The tool accepts single-file PDFs up to 10 MB on the free plan and up to 1 GB on Pro. Text-based PDFs (exported from Word, LaTeX, or a browser) convert cleanly. Scanned or image-only PDFs need OCR first — the tool detects this and runs it automatically where it can.
2
Let the tool infer structure
PDF pages don't have a concept of "chapter" or "paragraph" — the conversion reconstructs those by reading heading styles, font sizes, and page breaks. A well-formatted source produces clean chapter navigation; a poorly-scanned or badly-typeset source may need light cleanup in Calibre or the destination reader after conversion.
3
Convert and side-load
The EPUB is ready in a few seconds. Move it to your reader: Send-to-Kindle for Amazon devices, Books.app for iPhone/iPad, or Calibre for a proper library workflow. Both the source and the converted file are permanently deleted from our servers within 30 minutes.
What kind of PDF converts well
Text-heavy PDFs — novels, memoirs, non-fiction with a consistent layout — convert into EPUB beautifully. Reading experience jumps dramatically on a phone or e-reader, because the text finally reflows to fit the screen. Textbooks, cookbooks, illustrated books, and anything with complex multi-column layouts is a different story: reflow can scramble their careful arrangement. If your source relies heavily on how it's arranged on the page, keep the PDF instead.
Things to watch out for
Scanned PDFs need OCR. The visible "text" in a scan is really an image. OCR turns it into real text — the tool runs it automatically, but quality depends on how clean the scan is.
Chapter detection isn't magic. If your PDF uses inconsistent heading styles, chapters may bleed into each other in the EPUB. A quick clean-up in Calibre often fixes it.
Tables and equations degrade. Complex layouts don't reflow well. If your book has math or wide tables, the EPUB will render them as images — legible but not selectable or resizable.
Password-protected PDFs need the password. A locked PDF stays locked to the tool until you supply the same password used to open it in Adobe Reader.
When PDF to EPUB is the right call
Six practical reasons to move a book out of fixed-page PDF into a proper reader-friendly ebook format.
Reading a PDF novel on a phone
A PDF book on a phone screen is genuinely painful — tiny text, awkward panning, no bookmark memory. Converting to EPUB reflows the content to fit the screen and remembers your position between sessions. The reading experience jumps from "usable" to "actually enjoyable."
Adding a PDF to your e-reader library
Kindle, Kobo, Boox, and most modern e-readers do open PDFs, but they treat them as second-class citizens — no font resizing, no highlighting sync, awkward zooming. Converting to EPUB turns the PDF into a proper ebook that behaves like any other book in the library.
Feeding a text-to-speech app
Voice Dream, Speechify, and other TTS apps read EPUB cleanly — they can track position, adjust pacing, and skip images. Reading a PDF with the same tools tends to produce awkward chunking and lost place tracking. Convert first for smoother audio-first reading.
Making a scanned book portable
A scanned book in PDF form is a set of images pretending to be a book. Converting to EPUB with OCR extracts the actual text so you get selectable, searchable, resizable content — the difference between "a photo of pages" and "a real book."
Highlighting and annotating properly
Ebook readers make highlighting easy: drag across text, tap Save, filter later by chapter. PDF readers offer annotation, but the UX is clunkier — and syncing across devices is patchier. If you highlight a lot, EPUB is a real quality-of-life upgrade.
Shrinking a huge PDF for storage
A 100 MB image-heavy PDF often becomes a 2-3 MB EPUB once converted — the fixed-layout images and embedded fonts are replaced by lightweight reflowable HTML content inside the ebook. Same book, dramatically less storage.

About the PDF Format
PDF (Portable Document Format) was created by Adobe in 1993 and has since become an ISO standard (ISO 32000). It preserves the exact layout, fonts, images, and formatting of a document regardless of which device, operating system, or software is used to open it. PDF is the universal standard for sharing documents that must look the same everywhere, from legal contracts to academic papers.
Beyond simple document viewing, PDF supports interactive forms, digital signatures, AES-256 encryption, accessibility features, and embedded multimedia. The PDF/A variant is specifically designed for long-term archival of electronic documents. While PDFs are primarily view-only by default, they can be made editable with the right tools. PDF remains the go-to format for official documents, printable materials, and any content that requires consistent presentation across platforms.
PDF to EPUB FAQ
Quick answers about compatibility, quality, metadata handling, and the most common reasons to convert PDF files to EPUB.
How do I convert a PDF to EPUB?
Upload your PDF and click Convert. iFormat extracts the text and structure and creates a reflowable EPUB ebook. Download instantly — no Calibre required.
Why convert PDF to EPUB?
PDFs have a fixed page layout that doesn't adapt to small screens. EPUB is reflowable — text resizes to fit any screen, making it much more comfortable to read on phones, e-readers (Kobo, Kindle), and tablets.
Will images and formatting be preserved?
Text content, headings, and basic formatting are preserved. Embedded images are included. Complex PDF layouts (magazine-style, multi-column) may require cleanup in Sigil or Calibre after conversion.
Can I read the EPUB on Kindle?
Newer Kindle devices (from 2022) support EPUB directly. Older Kindles require MOBI format — convert your EPUB to MOBI using Calibre or iFormat's EPUB to MOBI converter.
Is PDF to EPUB conversion free?
Yes — completely free with no watermarks and no sign-up required.
