About the CR3 Format
CR3 is Canon's current raw format, introduced in 2018 with the EOS M50 and used across the R mirrorless line. It replaced the older TIFF-based CR2 with a new container and added C-RAW, a lossy compressed mode that cuts file size roughly in half while keeping most of the editing latitude of a full raw file.
The container change broke compatibility sharply: software that happily opened CR2 files needed entirely new code for CR3, and older versions of Photoshop, Lightroom and many free editors cannot open them at all. That is the usual reason to convert. DNG keeps the raw data editable, while JPEG or TIFF suits a finished image. If your files came from C-RAW rather than full raw, be aware you are starting from slightly less data before you push shadows hard.
