RAW to PNG: one decode, nothing added

Whichever vendor format sits behind the .raw extension, the decode is the same shape: interpolate the missing colour channels, apply white balance, map the linear sensor values to display gamma. PNG then stores that result without the DCT pass JPG would add, so no block artifacts appear in the shadows where raw files carry their noise.

Choose PNG when the frame will be edited further, or when shadow detail matters and JPG’s artifacts in dark areas would be visible. Choose JPG for anything finished.

How do I open RAW files?

It is a generic extension covering several manufacturer formats, which is why one .raw opens and another does not.

Is PNG a good choice for camera RAW?
It depends what you need. PNG is lossless, so it will not add compression artefacts — useful if the image is heading for further editing or compositing. The files are large, though, and PNG stores 8 bits per channel, so it cannot hold the full tonal range of the RAW either. For sharing or printing, JPG is usually the more practical target; for archiving, keep the RAW itself.

Should I edit the RAW first?
Yes. Exposure and white-balance corrections have far more room to work while the file is still RAW. Once converted, you are editing a fixed 8-bit image with much less recoverable detail in the highlights and shadows.

Why is the PNG larger than the original RAW?
It can be. RAW files use compression tuned to sensor data, while PNG stores every pixel of the fully demosaiced image — three or four channels at full resolution. A 25 MB RAW becoming a 40 MB PNG is normal, and is a good reason to use JPG unless you specifically need lossless output.
