When PNG is the right output

PNG is lossless and supports transparency — the two things JPG can't do. Screenshots, UI mockups, logos, icons, diagrams, and anything with sharp edges or text should be PNG. File sizes are larger than JPG for photographic content (usually 2-5×), so PNG is a bad choice for photographs unless you specifically need lossless. Note: PNG has no metadata for camera EXIF, so converting a photo JPG → PNG loses the camera info.

RW2 to PNG FAQ

Quick answers about compatibility, quality, metadata handling, and the most common reasons to convert RW2 files to PNG.

How do I convert RW2 to PNG?
Upload your RW2 image to iFormat and click Convert — it's decoded and re-encoded to PNG in seconds. It's free, adds no watermark, and needs no account. Batch upload is supported, and results download individually or as a ZIP.

What is RW2?
RW2 is a Panasonic camera RAW file, typically used for professional editing before export. Converting it to PNG makes the file easier to open, share, or upload where RW2 is not supported.

RW2 vs PNG — which format should I use?
RW2 is a Panasonic camera RAW file best for professional editing before export. PNG is a lossless format with transparency support best for logos, screenshots, and graphics with sharp edges. Use PNG when a website, form, or app requires it, or when you need PNG's specific strengths like smaller file size, wider compatibility, or transparency support.

How do I open RW2 files?
On Windows: Photos, with the Raw Image Extension. On a Mac: Preview and Photos, natively. Panasonic Lumix RAW.

Is PNG a good choice for camera RAW?
It depends what you need. PNG is lossless, so it will not add compression artefacts — useful if the image is heading for further editing or compositing. The files are large, though, and PNG stores 8 bits per channel, so it cannot hold the full tonal range of the RAW either. For sharing or printing, JPG is usually the more practical target; for archiving, keep the RAW itself.

Should I edit the RAW first?
Yes. Exposure and white-balance corrections have far more room to work while the file is still RAW. Once converted, you are editing a fixed 8-bit image with much less recoverable detail in the highlights and shadows.

Why is the PNG larger than the original RAW?
It can be. RAW files use compression tuned to sensor data, while PNG stores every pixel of the fully demosaiced image — three or four channels at full resolution. A 25 MB RAW becoming a 40 MB PNG is normal, and is a good reason to use JPG unless you specifically need lossless output.
